El Underwater Music Festival (Festival de Música Submarino) celebró su trigésima tercera edición con el mismo espíritu que cuando nació en 1985, como es concienciar a la población de la importancia de conservar un arrecife que tan solo superan el Gran Arrecife de Coral australiano y el arrecife mesoamericano.
Y para ello, nada mejor que escuchar música bajo el agua en un paraje natural y único.

“Como los Cayos no tenían teatros y a nosotros nos gustaba la música y el buceo, pensamos que por qué no podíamos poner la música debajo del mar. De eso ya hace 33 años”, dijo en declaraciones el cofundador del festival, Bill Becker.
Becker es además director de noticias de la radio local US1 Radio, veterana emisora que selecciona las canciones del festival y que es sintonizada por los conductores que atraviesa la legendaria autopista US1 que comienza en Cayo Hueso.
El día del evento, la emisora retransmite una cita en la que se intercalan música y anuncios dedicados a la protección del lugar, para que “más gente pueda disfrutar del arrecife de coral en el futuro”, dice Becker, y de sus más de 50 especies diferentes de coral y 100 tipos de peces tropicales.
Mientras Becker declara, más de 400 amantes de esta suerte de “buceo musical” se acercan poco a poco a la zona, unos con equipos de buceo y otros simplemente disfrazados de estrellas del rock y máscaras de esnórquel.
